ASU's Astrobiology Program supports students at all levels who assist faculty in conducting important research. Currently in residence at ASU are 2 Ph.D., 5 Masters candidates, 3 Post Docs, 4 research staff, and 6 undergraduate students. Additionally, there are many unfunded students contributing to research projects through course related activities. Other opportunities for students include internships through NASA and the NASA sponsored Arizona Space Grant Consortium. The consortium supported 1 undergraduate and 2 graduate students in Astrobiology during the spring 2000 semester. Students who participate in research projects gain personal and professional experience that will benefit them in their academic and career development. The Astrobiology Program at ASU is founding member of NASA's Astrobiology Institute (NAI). This is a "virtual" institute that has state-of-the-art electronic connections among its members allowing for audio/video conferencing and "real-time" internet presentations. This innovative solution bridges the distance between institutions, allowing members to share information and coordinate efforts in a "face-to-face" environment. |
