was founded in 1997 with ASU as one of the orginal 11 lead institutions.
The NAI represents a partnership between NASA, universities, and
research organizations
to promote, conduct, and lead integrated multidisciplinary research,
to train young scientists, and to provide public access to the adventure
of studying the living universe.

Partnerships
The NASA
Astrobiology Institute has initiated a program of partnership with other
international astrobiology organizations to provide collaborative opportunities
for its researchers with the global science community. Foreign astrobiology
organizations can propose to become either Associate
or Affiliate Members of the NAI. Associate Membership entails a formal
agreement between NASA and the foreign government. International requests
which do not elect to pursue formal agreements are considered Affiliate
Members.
Spain became
the first associate international institution in 2000, and was followed
by Australia, France and the UK in 2001.
