MER Landing Site Workshop
The rescheduled
Mars landing site workshop meeting will take place on October 17th and
18th, 2001 at the Courtyard Marriott in Pasadena. If you have plans
to attend the workshop and have not contacted John Grant or Matt Golombek,
please do by October 3 for planning purposes.
If you
are presenting at the workshop and have not yet done so, please forward
an electronic copy of your presentation materials to Matt Golombek (mgolombek@jpl.nasa.gov)
and John Grant (grantj@nasm.si.edu).
The objectives
for the workshop remain unchanged and most of the original program will
be employed. All of the talks that were to be presented in Ithaca will
be presented at the meeting in Pasadena. There will, however, be minor
adjustments and the schedule will be expanded to two full days in order
to ensure ample time for discussion. A revised program reflecting these
minor changes will be available shortly.
We hope
that you will be able to attend the rescheduled workshop and will continue
to participate in the landing site selection process for the MER 2003
mission.
Previous
information:
"Science
Spokespersons" for the various sites to be discussed at the workshop
are reminded that their presentations should focus on how a particular
site is best suited for achieving the stated MER mission science objectives.
Presentations should provide specific examples of how the MER rovers
and Athena science instruments could be used at the proposed landing
site to meet the mission science objectives. A complete description
of the MER mission science objectives is available at: http://research.hq.nasa.gov/code_s/nra/current/AO-01-OSS-04/index.html.
Presenters
should also be aware that MOC image coverage of each of the highest
priority proposed landing ellipses is now approximately 30%. "Spokespersons"
should be sure and review relevant images for their sites and include
discussion of them in their presentations. The calibrated MOC images
are available on the USGS web site (http://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/mer/).
Other
versions of the images are available on the Ames landing site web site
(http://marsoweb.nas.nasa.gov/landingsites/)
and the MSSS website (http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/guest/)
