Astrobiology
lies at the very heart of the new Mars
Program and it is important that the NASA
Astrobiology Institute (NAI) become more of a voice in the community.
To promote a greater involvement, the NAI Mars Focus Group (NAI MFG)
will hold a series of videoconferences in 2001 to discuss important
programmatic and scientific issues in Mars exploration. A major topic
for discussion over the next few months will be landing site selection
for the 2003 mission and beyond.
A primary
goal of these discussions will be to more fully engage the NAI and broader
Astrobiology/Mars community in programmatic planning and to spark an
interest in mission involvement. Specifically, we plan to review the
most promising Astrobiology sites for landed Mars missions in 2003 and
beyond and to discuss the important science goals and objectives that
might be pursued at these sites within mission design and payload constraints.
Objectives include promoting scientific discussion, debate and hopefully
concensus within the NAI MFG community.
This
website provides an archive for all non-proprietary materials presented
during the Mars Focus Group videocons, as well as summaries of videocon
discussions. All are invited to review these materials and to participate
in our discussions, either through attendance at the videocons or via
email. (Please direct comments to Jack Farmer (NAI MFG Chair) jfarmer@asu.edu).
PowerPoint
presentations displayed by the presenters during the Focus Groups are
available to download to your computer. If you do not have Microsoft
PowerPoint on your computer, you can view the presentations by downloading
a "viewer" for PC
or Mac
platforms from the Microsoft Web site. Click on the presenters below
